Baby Blues Sings the Omega Trues
Raw Food Recipe for Babies #2
Have you ever have one of those times where you’ve gotten really behind on supplying yourself ingredients for raw food? Maybe those dadburned bananas are still green? Your spouse found your stash of cacao powder and is making lines on a mirror in the bathroom? We were in one of these situations today. And with our local raw vegan store closed, I thought I would wrack my brain and come up with a smoothie recipe that was at least palatable.

Little did I know that it was more than palatable, it was magnifique! Usually if we make a smoothie we have to plan on giving some to our little boy…he’s no dummy, he knows where the good stuff is and its usually in a mason jar! Thank goodness I made enough.

I just had to write this one down because little bambino is loving life! When he got a taste of this one he was literally begging for more!
While we primarily feed him Mama’s milk at every chance, we also supplement his diet with the best foods nature has to offer. Of which we’ve researched and have found that they are age appropriate and safe. Most books on raising babies encourage feeding them gentle pureed foods when they start to give you looks that say “um….excuse me? Whatever you’ve got in your chops, pops looks REALLY good!” That’s usually the go sign!
Here’s a recipe that will give the parent a big smoothie too!
Spring water
1/4 cup organic raw hazelnuts
3 tbs raw organic chia seeds
2 organic red delicious apples, cored, unpeeled
1 pint organic strawberries, fresh or frozen
1 tbs raw organic carob powder.
raw sweetener of your choice and palate
Start by adding chia seeds into blender, then add hazelnuts and spring water. I usually add about 1 cup to start. Blend for one minute depending on your blender. My Vitamix will turn any nut into a nut mylk within that time. Add apples, blend, strawberries, blend, and carob powder. I usually find that carob powder sweetens things up just fine but you may find yourself adding some raw agave or maybe yacon syrup.
Important: make sure that if you use frozen strawberries to leave your Vitamix or Blendtec on a while to warm it the smoothie to at least room temperature. Babies and cold foods, especially spoonable foods is not a good idea ever. To thicken, you can add chia.
I think it was a hit, how about you?

Love the pics – esp the last one. It's my fave.
Boy, he could not get enough of this and I couldn't spoon it to him fast enough for his liking either. ha ha! You're right, it was a hit! It was so cute seeing the smoothie all over his face.

Thanks Isle!
Oooh! He is so cute!
I wish my son and wife had computer access at home…..my 1st and only grandchild was born last October and it would be great for them to see your posts. I guess I will just have to print out your recipes and send by “snail mail”.
This goes without saying/writing, but every parent is happy to hear it/read it…..your son is a “cutie”!
Thanks HippieMom!
Thank you very much MCM. I wish every parent out there knew they had options when it came to feeding their babies!!
MMMmmm! We're going to try your recipe. Can totally identify with “making lines on a mirror in the bathroom” with the cacao : ) I've been wanting to grow a cacao tree in our west window, with the lemons and limes.
Ooh you're lucky to be able to do that! I'd have to buy a double insulated greenhouse with 1000 watt bulbs!
Let me know how you like it!
