OK, so I’m getting closer to my one year mark being raw. Woohoo! July 16th, 2008. I have started to feel pressure, imaginary, self-made pressure to really push through the barrier and go for it – exercise wise. No don’t worry I won’t go weekend warrior and end up in the hospital but I will push myself harder than I’ve ever pushed myself before. Why do I want to push myself? Because I am a warrior. Ok, and also, because as healthy as raw is, it still isn’t exercise. Yes you can lose weight while sitting on your butt, however, it won’t get you toned and won’t get your heart healthy.

So starting tomorrow, I am heading out to the bike path which goes practically from my home – STRAIGHT- to the garden! No stop signs, nothing. Wee, look ma! No hands!

Here is how the mileage and gas works out….Now if I drive the back way it is a 20 mile round trip journey. If I take the freeways it is 34 miles round trip. If I bike it? 15 miles round trip, ah heck ya! Only problem is my bike is a mountain bike, with mountain bike tread. I’ll need to get a smoother tire for this trip because it’s much easier to bike when you aren’t fighting your tread.

So anyways, travelling in my car, gas costs about $6.50 for the round trip. That starts to add up, and then you have traffic etc. I figure this is my way of going green. If I go out there 4 times a week that’s a savings of $104 in gas a month. And I am reducing my carbon sasquatch print.

Please note on the first picture is Sasquatch, the second is Robert Smith, lead singer of the Cure.

Way back in the day I used to ride my bike a lot. No helmet either, just ride my 10 speed probably 50 miles a day easy, while flipping cassette tapes in my Walkman. And it’s on this same bike trail too. (WARNING: Segue into memory lane) Yes I know that the mention of a Sony Walkman dates me however, lemme tell ya a little story. My brother knew a guy who had a box of them. Nobody had the special all black ones with the silver metallic fleck paint. I couldn’t even find a picture of one. This one pictured is the second generation. The one we had was probably meant for Japan. We later figured out that we were probably being naive and got some, ahem misguided merchandise? OH well!

And, if you only knew what it meant to have a Sony Walkman back then…it was an even bigger deal than the Iphone. The Iphone is just another bone in a long line of bones that have been thrown to the Mac addict. If you had a Sony Walkman, you literally had the equivalent of a Humvee on your head. Please picture that….. That’s how ostentatious they were and oh the jealousy!…at least in Jr. High. That was the last hurrah for cassette tape music as CD’s became vogue in my High School daze. Now I’ll just put on my Tmobile Wing and listen to, oh gosh, 2 Gigs of music? 20 CD’s sheesh. It’s a different world. It’s strange to think that I can check my email and surf the net wherever I want to as well. Back then it was so quiet….sigh. Pros and cons to both ways of living.

Ok, enough ramble dramble. So when I get the time I’ll be biking out to the garden, timing it and shuffling my schedule around to make the trek when I can, hopefully at least 3 times a week. The weather is supposed to be warming up so I need to get out there and finish planting. We’ve also decided to work another plot and I found a real winner. Great soil, nice and cushy. Should have a great salsa garden there.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE AND TO ALL THE MOMMA’S HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

  • Oh. My. Gosh. There’s no way I could ever bike 20 miles. Not once. Certainly ((never)) three times a week. I can’t even fathom wanting to. It’s beyond my comprehension. I think I might pass out just thinking about it. But good for you! And you kids are ((so)) young if CDs were alive while you were in high school. Freaky, that thought!

  • Isle Dance, I was thinking the same thing….CDs in highschool? Sam is a baby, still. :-P

I agree about the Sony Walkman being like a Humvee on your head–that was brilliant coming up with that analogy!

Sam, I think your biking idea is fantastic!! I have, yet, to get so much energy that I feel like exercising (I blame it on low iron, but it’s probably just me being lazy). However, I’m doing a 30 day yoga challenge starting next month. I hope you’ll post updates about your exercising, to keep me inspired. ;-) The savings you’ll be making while exercising is really amazing, too!!!

Oh, that was just MEAN how you made fun of Robert Smith! :-P He does look like crap in that picture, though.

Thanks for the flowers! I love them! :-)

    Lots of love to you,

    Wendi

  • CONGRATS!!! One whole year is quite an accomplishment:) I hope you luv riding your bike-it sounds awesome! You reminded me to get mine fixed:)

  • I totally agree with you about how important fitness is! I think it goes hand in hand with the raw diet.

Isn’t it a great feeling to be coming up on 1 yr?! :)

  • Oh, I’ve been wanting to pull my bike out of the garage. If I could figure out a way to bike to work w/o getting my ass run over I would do it. Then I would be really late in the morning. Geesh! I think it’s a great idea, and 15 mi. clicks by pretty fast on a bike (well, a street bike anyhow).
Congrats on your year raw-iversary soon. That rocks!

  • It’s time I get my behind on the elliptical, so I’m with you on the exercise bandwagon bro. I think that’s a great idea to bike to your garden. I do hope that you WILL wear a helmet though, although it’s going to make for a very interesting ‘farmer’ tan.

  • Antony

I’m with you on feeling the need to exercise. Not sure I could manage 20 miles on a bike (yet?) Way to go!!! :-)

  • Yep, exercise is the way to go! I just came back from a 3 mile walk but my exercise of choice is running!!

Keep us posted on your biking adventures and lets have a Par-Tay on July 16th!

  • I loved the illustrations. I feel like those dogs right now. I have to get off my lazy behinder and get running again.
My garden is in my back yard, so I don’t have any excuses to HAVE to get on a bike and head out. I just work back there. I have to MAKE time to bike or run.

    Good luck, weekend warrior.
Oh, I know of a wonderful place that has LOTS of stinging nettles. Right in Risible’s back yard. She said she was getting bitten by them. You should be a weekend warrior and go save that sweet damsel in distress.

    happy gardening

  • Do you have any plans for your one year rawnniversary? Mine is in October so I still have a ways to go. Can’t wait to see how you celebrate! :-)

  • Pssst…it seems you have been extra busy lately, too? I thought the bloglines thing wasn’t working, but nope…it’s quiet on your end, too. ;-)

I hope all is well with you, Sam!

    Love,

    Wendi
